about us

Greetings!

Like many great things, bruiser bulldogs was founded on an ambitious idea. The idea centered around our desire to create a bulldog solely designed to excel as a family dog. A bulldog designed to fix the many issues that currently plague the breed today. This bulldog would excel in functionality as much as beauty. The health of the bulldog would be valued and prioritized first and foremost before any other consideration. We would fight to improve the breed, correcting the many poor decisions uneducated breeders have over the years that have weakened the breed as a whole. Being a family dog, the bulldog would not only need to be healthy, its personality would also need to be loving and friendly being the absolute joy of the entire family. This founding idea, to create a healthy, functional, and loving bulldog has guided and driven every decision we have ever made with our breeding program and quite possibly is the best way to describe what a bruiser bulldog really is and what makes us different from your average bulldog.

While many years have separated us from our original idea, the vision it created still drives us every day and has created the value system in which we operate.  Our belief is that every breeder has a value system that drives their actions whether they acknowledge it or not.  Some breeders value rare colors, some value winning AKC championships, while other bulldog breeders simply value making the quick dollar.  While some value systems are better than others, we would argue very few breeders value the health of their bulldogs as their number one priority.  There are simply too many distractions!  Our value system is built on the creation of the perfect family bulldog, a bulldog that is healthy, carries a great personality and well socialized. I hope you will join us and continue reading about how go about creating the perfect family bulldog!

Health

The foundation that drives our breeding program is health.  If you have spent any time at all researching the bulldog breed, it is certain you have come across the statement that the bulldog has many “health issues” and is a complex dog to care for; “but what are these health issues?”.  Our first step in creating a healthy bulldog is to actually define and address the major “health issues” the bulldog suffers from.  What we know is the major bulldog health issues can be broken down into 4 categories: the joints, the eyes, the heart, and the breathability of the bulldog.  While there are other minor health issues ie. allergies, we feel it is vital to address these four health categories as priority.  It is important to note that many other dog breeds suffer in some form or another from these same four categories.  The key is to reduce and eliminate the issues through proper genetic selection.  All of our bulldogs must pass our Gold Star Health Standard, which considers all four major health criteria, before being eligible for our breeding program. The only way to create a healthy bulldog is to pair together healthy parents that complement one another and our Gold Star Health Standard ensures that we only breed to healthiest bulldogs available.

Balanced Personality

A great personality is essential to any bulldog fitting in seamlessly with a family. We consider the bulldog breed to have one of the top personalities amongst any dog breed. Their combination of friendly humor and laid back nature fits in with almost every type of family. We do however have a very selective standard for personality that we require from all our bulldogs. We strive for what we like to call a balanced bulldog. A balanced bulldog represents what is best about the bulldog personality. On one hand, the balanced bulldog is very playful and is always willing to romp, play tug o war, or fetch when the family is interested in doing so. Playfulness, while part of the balanced bulldog certainly does not define it completely. Equally important is the bulldog’s willingness to relax, lie down and snuggle on the couch. A balanced bulldog has the intrinsic understanding of whether their owner wants to play or relax and responds appropriately. This type of bulldog can be a family’s greatest joy and is what we pride ourselves in producing.

Comprehensive Socialization

Proper socialization ensures that your puppy will adapt smoothly to its new home, friends, and family. Each of our puppies is introduced daily to new sounds and experiences that help mold their personality and character. We allow them to interact with other dogs, cats, children, strangers, and even experiences such as a daily bath to help them develop confidence and ensure proper behavior as an adult. Much of the behavioral issues that adult dogs display are directly related to their upbringing as a puppy and the breeder that raised it. If you are looking for a well socialized bulldog, we are one of the leaders and innovators in raising confident, socially adept puppies.Along with correct socialization, we also believe in placing the right puppy in the right home. Like humans, puppies all carry different personality traits and respond more positively to certain environments. At Bruiser Bulldogs, we conduct a series of personality tests with each of our puppies that will help you decide which puppy fits you best. Potential owners are able to choose a bulldog baby with the color, sex, and personality that they like best.
